Event Description

Hacktoberfest — brought to you by DigitalOcean in partnership with Dev & Intel — is a month-long celebration of open source software. This year, CodeChef-VIT brings to you an opportunity to learn and work on industry level open source projects.

Maintainers are invited to guide would-be contributors towards issues that will help move the project forward, and contributors get the opportunity to give back to both projects they like and others they've just discovered. No contribution is too small — bug fixes and documentation updates are valid ways of participating.

Can't make it to this online meetup? Hacktoberfest is virtual and open to participants from around the globe. Sign up to participate today.

Rules and Rewards

First, sign up on the Hacktoberfest site at https://hacktoberfest.digitalocean.com. To qualify for the official limited edition Hacktoberfest shirt, you must register and make four pull requests between October 1-31. Pull requests can be to any public repo on GitHub, not just the ones with issues labeled Hacktoberfest. If a maintainer reports your pull request as spam or spammy behavior, or not in line with the project’s code of conduct, you will be ineligible to participate.

Connect with other Hacktoberfest participants by using @DigitalOcean, @hacktoberfest, #hacktoberfest on your social media platform of choice.

New to DigitalOcean? Receive USD $100 in infrastructure credit at https://do.co/hacktoberfest100.

Schedule

  1. Welcome. We will begin by giving an introduction about what Hacktoberfest is, what CodeChef-VIT is and what we do, followed by information about our collaboration with MLH, followed by an overview of the code of conduct.
  2. Audience Survey. We will then ask the audience about their experiences with Hacktoberfest or Open Source Contributions (if any) and how familiar they are with both the terms.
  3. Introduce Open Source. We will explain to the audience what Open Source is, why it is important and how useful it is for one's personal growth.
  4. Introduce Git and GitHub. We will then introduce GitHub through a hands on session on GitHub followed by how to use the Command Line followed by a session on Git (also hands on). This will teach everyone how to use the Command Line Interface (CLI) to do all activities instead of depending on the GitHub GUI.
  5. Demos. We will show a few open source projects made by CodeChef-VIT along with a repository we have made for Hacktoberfest to ensure people know where they can contribute easily within our organisation.
  6. Guest Speaker. Our guest speaker, Mr. Shivay L. - MLH Fellow and GSoC Mentor at Jenkins and CNCF, GCI Mentor at Tensorflow will discuss his journey and motivate the audience further.
  7. Audience Survey. We will end the event by rolling out a feedback form asking what everyone learnt and what they would like to learn next.
