Event Description

Hacktoberfest is a good excuse to get started as an opensource contributor. You don't even need to be a developer! If you can write, design or anything else, come and join us!

With this event, we want to help you make your first contributions to humanitarian opensource, and show you how you can help lots of people even from your home.

Can't make it to this online meetup? Hacktoberfest is virtual and open to participants from around the globe. Sign up to participate today. You can also get in touch with us via email if you want to take part in the MapSwipe effort at any time.

Rules and Rewards

First, sign up on the Hacktoberfest site at https://hacktoberfest.digitalocean.com. To qualify for the official limited edition Hacktoberfest shirt, you must register and make four pull requests between October 1-31. Pull requests can be to any public repo on GitHub, not just the ones with issues labeled Hacktoberfest. If a maintainer reports your pull request as spam or spammy behavior, or not in line with the project’s code of conduct, you will be ineligible to participate.

Connect with other Hacktoberfest participants by using @DigitalOcean, @hacktoberfest, #hacktoberfest on your social media platform of choice.

New to DigitalOcean? Receive USD $100 in infrastructure credit at https://do.co/hacktoberfest100.

Schedule

Absolute beginners are very welcome. One of the organizers of the session had never done a pull request 6 months ago. You too can learn very quickly and make a difference!

Here is a rough agenda for the session:
- Welcome 10 minutes
- Introductions 1 minute per participant, just to know how we can best use this time.
- About Hacktoberfest 5 minutes to explain what Hacktoberfest is about and what we are hoping to do with this meeting.
- OpenSource 5-10 minutes about opensource and why it's great for humanitarian work
- Let's hack together! 2 hours where you hack, learn and share what you know. We will adapt the session to everyone's skills and what you want to learn. We can't teach you programming in 2 hours, but we can give you some useful tips to start contributing to opensource (and MapSwipe in particular ;) in a meaningful way.

If English is not your best language, we will also be able to help you in French and German.
