Event Description

A hacktoberfest virtual meetup!

We have a few projects to consider working on for hacktoberfest in the Cardiff R User group:

badgeR is an R package written by Dom for our Cardiff SatRday in 2019 to help design and produce badges for the attendees to wear: https://github.com/satRdays/badgeR
We want to extend it's function with a few new features to encourage it's use in other satRdays around the world!

satRday_site_template is a Hugo website that has made each the individual conference websites for a few years now: https://github.com/satRdays/satRday_site_template
There are a range of jobs to do here including extending it with new features, fully closing down a few small bugs, and updating/replacing some of the default dependencies which are no longer maintained. Theres also a potential GitHub action to be created which would smooth the request and deployment process for each individual conference.

tdor provides data on killings and suicides of transgender people, as memorialized in the Transgender Day of Remembrance: https://github.com/CaRdiffR/tdor . There are a range of issues to contribute to documentation and extending the API integration which would all be beneficial.

If you've never been involved in hacktoberfest, it's basically programmer Christmas. It exists to encourage people to contribute to Open Source code. ESPECIALLY if you haven't done it before. You can find more info here: https://hacktoberfest.digitalocean.com/

Incidentally this year DEV.TO are also sponsoring the event, and Dave spent a bit of time this summer writing a package to help publish .Rmd documents to dev.to: https://github.com/DaveParr/dev.to.ol so if you're interested in dev.to as a blog service, or already active, there are a few items that can be contributed there too :)

Hacktoberfest — brought to you by DigitalOcean in partnership with Dev & Intel — is a month-long celebration of open source software. Maintainers are invited to guide would-be contributors towards issues that will help move the project forward, and contributors get the opportunity to give back to both projects they like and others they've just discovered. No contribution is too small — bug fixes and documentation updates are valid ways of participating.

Can't make it to this online meetup? Hacktoberfest is virtual and open to participants from around the globe. Sign up to participate today.
